On-Site Lab

Convenient And Efficient Lab Results

Salem Family Medicine wants it to be as easy as possible for you to get the medical care your family needs. By offering labs and other services in our office, we make it possible for you to get the services you need without making a separate appointment or visiting another office. An on-site lab also means your provider will get results quickly, so any needed treatment can begin quickly as well. We partner with Quest Labs to deliver timely lab results to our patients. We also have the ability to order labs at LabCorp or any outside lab, if insurance requires it.

Routine Labwork

Blood can tell your provider about your organ function, diet, metabolism, illnesses and diseases. At your annual physical, we will encourage patients to get specific routine blood tests done so we can get a better picture of what’s going on in your body. When you are not feeling like yourself or perhaps having unexplained symptoms, these same blood tests may explain why.

Typical Routine Blood Tests

This test measures the blood for white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelets. It can detect anemia, nutritional deficiencies, an infection, cancer and bone marrow problems. When these results come back as abnormal, we can order more specific testing to learn more.

This test measures your blood for things like glucose, sodium, potassium, electrolytes, and creatinine for issues with the kidneys, diabetes and hormonal imbalance.

This test measures your blood for things like glucose, sodium, potassium, electrolytes, and creatinine like the BMP as well as alkaline phosphate (ALP), albumin and bilirubin. Abnormal results may signify hepatitis, gallstones, Paget’s disease, bile duct blockage, hepatitis, Gilbert’s syndrome or hemolysis.

This test measures the amount of fat in your blood by measuring good cholesterol (HDL), bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides. These results may indicate a plaque build-up in your arteries and future or present heart disease.

Other On-Site Lab Tests

In addition to standard blood work, our on-site lab is equipped to run other tests to record key metrics about your health. Labs tests include:

A blood culture is a test of a blood sample to find germs like bacteria or fungus that can cause an infection. A bacterial infection in the blood can be serious because it can spread through the body and lead to further complications. If your provider orders this test, it’s because they think you might have a systemic infection, and they want to come up with the best treatment for you.

A urinalysis is a test of your urine to detect and manage various issues such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and diabetes. During a urinalysis, our team will examine the content of urine, including the concentration and appearance. If your exam yields unusual results, our team may recommend further analysis to properly diagnose your condition. A urinalysis may also be used for pregnancy testing and drug screenings.

If you are sexually active, it is important to regularly get tested for STDs, even if you are not experiencing any symptoms. Many STDs can go undetected—and the earlier they are diagnosed, the better chances you have at managing or recovering from them. In addition to regular STD testing, the CDC recommends that people aged 13 to 64 should be tested at least once for HIV.

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, are taking cholesterol-lowering medications or have risk factors for heart disease, your provider may want you to have frequent cholesterol testing to monitor your cholesterol and the effectiveness of treatments.

A thyroid panel is a group of tests to help evaluate thyroid gland function and diagnose thyroid disorders. This test may be ordered when you have signs and symptoms that suggest underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) due to a thyroid disorder or when to monitor your thyroid function when you have been diagnosed with thyroid disease.

There are numerous types of tests to detect a hormonal imbalance. A blood test is one of the most common ways to test hormone levels because it can detect testosterone, estrogen, cortisol and thyroid levels. A saliva test can also be used to detect several types of hormones such as estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone levels. Based on the test results, your provider might order further testing to ensure the proper treatment.

A blood glucose test screens for diabetes by measuring the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Your provider may order a blood glucose test if you have symptoms of high glucose levels (hyperglycemia) or low glucose levels (hypoglycemia) or if you have been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes to monitor your treatment.
